There’s something undeniably special about getting married at home. Whether it’s the garden you grew up in or the garden you want to grow old in, hosting your wedding at home offers the opportunity to create a celebration that feels entirely your own.

As a wedding planner specialising in marquee weddings, I’ve seen just how magical these celebrations can be. A thoughtfully designed marquee, a garden filled with flowers and the people you love most can create an atmosphere that’s difficult to replicate in a traditional wedding venue.

But while the idea of a garden wedding sounds wonderfully romantic, there’s plenty to consider before you commit to transforming your outdoor space into a wedding venue.

So, if you’re dreaming of a wedding at home, here are the pros and cons I encourage couples to consider before taking the plunge.

The pros of having a garden marquee wedding at home

A wedding that feels completely personal

One of the biggest advantages of getting married at home is the freedom to create a day that reflects you as a couple.

Unlike a traditional venue, where certain layouts, timings or styling choices may already be established, a marquee gives you a beautiful blank canvas. From the ceremony setting and dining arrangements to the bar, dance floor and late-night lounge, every element can be designed around the experience you want to create.

A sailcloth marquee is particularly lovely for this. With its sweeping canopy, elegant wooden poles and soft, light-filtering fabric, it creates a naturally beautiful backdrop that feels both sophisticated and relaxed.

You can keep things understated with natural textures, seasonal flowers and candlelight, or embrace a more elaborate design with statement florals, layered tablescapes and carefully considered lighting.

The result is a celebration that feels less like a wedding package and more like an extension of your own style.

It can also give you more freedom over timings and the overall format of the day, although noise restrictions, local requirements and supplier logistics will still need to be considered.

For couples who want their wedding to feel like the most beautiful garden party they’ve ever hosted, a marquee can be the perfect setting.

Making the most of a meaningful setting

There’s an emotional element to a home wedding that shouldn’t be underestimated.

Perhaps it’s the garden where you spent your childhood summers, the family home that has hosted countless celebrations, or simply a place that means something special to you both. Getting married there adds another layer of meaning to an already memorable day.

A garden marquee also allows you to make the most of your surroundings. Mature trees, established borders, rolling lawns and beautiful views can all become part of the design, rather than something hidden behind the walls of a venue.

With a sailcloth marquee, the connection to the outdoors is especially lovely. Natural light filters through the canopy, and when the weather allows, open sides create a wonderful sense of bringing the garden into the celebration.

As the afternoon moves into evening, the atmosphere changes too. Festoon lighting, candles and the soft glow of the marquee can transform a familiar garden into something truly magical.

Freedom to create your own layout and flow

One of the things I love most about planning marquee weddings is the flexibility they offer.

You can create distinct spaces for each part of the day: a welcoming drinks reception outdoors, a beautiful dining area beneath the canopy, a dedicated dance floor and perhaps a relaxed seating area for guests who want to take a break from the party.

The key is to think about how your guests will experience the day, rather than simply how the marquee will look in photographs.

Where will guests gather after the ceremony? How will they move between the bar and their tables? Is there enough space for the caterers to work efficiently without disrupting the celebration?

These details might not be the first things you imagine when dreaming of your wedding, but they make a significant difference to how the day feels.

A well-planned garden marquee should feel effortless to your guests, even when there has been a great deal of thought behind the scenes.

The cons of having a garden marquee wedding at home

Of course, there’s another side to consider. A marquee wedding can be incredibly rewarding, but it does require more planning than many couples initially anticipate.

Your garden needs to work as a venue

The first question isn’t necessarily whether your garden is beautiful. It’s whether it can accommodate the wedding you have in mind. A marquee needs sufficient space not only for the structure itself, but also for access, installation, anchoring and any additional facilities. You’ll also need to think about where guests will park, how suppliers will access the site and whether there’s room for catering equipment, toilets and power facilities.

The ground conditions matter too. A garden that looks perfectly level in summer may present challenges after heavy rain, while established trees, underground services, slopes and narrow access routes can all influence what’s possible.

This is why I always recommend a professional site assessment before committing to a particular marquee or layout. It’s much easier to work through these considerations at the beginning than to discover limitations when your plans are already well underway.

The weather is never entirely predictable

It wouldn’t be a discussion about marquee weddings without mentioning the British weather!

The beauty of a marquee is that it offers shelter while allowing you to enjoy the outdoor setting. However, a structure alone doesn’t guarantee that everyone will be comfortable in every condition. If it rains, you’ll need to consider how guests will move between the house, garden and marquee without walking across muddy ground. If temperatures drop, appropriate heating and a suitable enclosed layout may be needed. On warmer days, ventilation and shade become essential. Flooring deserves particular attention. The right option will depend on your site, the style of marquee and the season, but it can make a real difference to both comfort and practicality.

My advice is to plan for the weather you might get, not simply the weather you hope for. A thoughtful contingency plan means you can enjoy your day without feeling that the entire experience depends on sunshine.

The budget can be more complex than expected

It’s tempting to assume that getting married at home will automatically be less expensive than hiring a wedding venue. Sometimes it can offer excellent value, but it’s important to compare the full costs rather than the headline price of the marquee alone.

When building your budget, consider the marquee, flooring, lighting, furniture, power, catering facilities, toilets, waste management and any additional infrastructure your property needs.

You may also need to account for landscaping, access improvements or reinstating the garden after the event. Depending on your arrangements, accommodation and transport may need additional consideration too.

A beautiful marquee is the starting point, rather than the whole wedding.

I always encourage couples to establish a realistic overall budget early on, then prioritise the elements that matter most to them. This helps ensure that the finished celebration feels cohesive, rather than leaving important practical details until the end.

One of the key benefits of working with Parlour, is that we have the knowledge of what goes in to end-to-end wedding planning, so our clients are always far less likely to encounter big surprises with their budget.

You are effectively creating your own wedding venue

This is perhaps the biggest consideration of all. At a traditional wedding venue, many of the practical elements are already in place. At home, you’re responsible for bringing together the infrastructure, suppliers and services needed to make the day run smoothly.

That means coordinating delivery and installation schedules, managing supplier access, arranging facilities and ensuring everyone knows where they need to be and when. You’ll also need to check whether any permissions, insurance arrangements, local restrictions or other requirements apply to your particular property and event.

Then there’s the house itself. Depending on your guest numbers, you may need to think carefully about bathroom access, areas that are off-limits, where the wedding party will get ready and how to keep the household running during the build-up.

None of this should put you off, but it does mean that a home wedding benefits enormously from careful planning and experienced suppliers.

My biggest piece of advice? Don’t underestimate the value of having someone oversee the logistics, coordinate your suppliers and manage the day itself. You want to be celebrating with your guests, not wondering whether the caterers have found the power supply.

So, is a marquee wedding at home worth it?

Every. single. time.

A home wedding offers a level of personalisation, sentiment and creative freedom that’s hard to match. With the right setting and a beautifully considered design, a garden marquee can become the backdrop for a celebration that feels completely individual to you.

But it’s important to recognise that the freedom comes with responsibility. You’ll need to think carefully about the site, infrastructure, budget and practicalities, as well as the design details that make the day feel special.

The good news is that you don’t have to figure everything out on your own.
